Biofeedback Useful For ADHD Patients
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is a complex neurobiological disorder which can occur in children, adolescents and adults. Symptoms include difficulty with attention, concentration, memory, and organization, and for some people, it also is characterized by impulsivity, hyperactivity, aggressiveness, and relationship problems. The patient tends to focus on many things at once as a result sustained attention to one thing is often difficult.
The reason for this is people suffering from ADHD have an overabundance of theta brainwaves (associated with daydreaming and inattentiveness) and lowered levels of beta brainwaves (associated with concentration and focus). People with ADD or ADHD have a number of variations in the beta patterns, all of which can be indicators of poor focusing and distractibility.
How is Biofeedback useful?
Through training sessions involving biofeedback, clients can often learn to control beta brainwave patterns. After the learning of more effective relaxation and brainwave controls, many patients have reported of long termed improvements without the dependence on medication. Biofeedback approaches can help the person restore a calm learning approach to the hyperactive child (through Theta suppression and Beta accentuation).
“Brainwave entrainment” via pulsing lights and sounds is considered to be an efficient way of learning to maintain proper brainwave controls until such control becomes more automatic for the patient.
